PART EIGHT
The Visitor
âWEâRE GOING TO THE SAFE HOUSE,â Liam states, his tone absolute. âPack a bag.â
âWhat?â I gasp. âNo. We arenât hiding, remember?â
âWeâre fucking doing whatever it takes to keep you safe.â
âMeg didnât try to hurt me,â I argue, crossing to stand in front of him. âWeâll find her. You had my dresses delivered, Liam. We just talked about our wedding.â
âAnd we will get married, and you will have your dresses to choose from. But I was also sure weâd get Meg on camera. We didnât. Weâre flying in the dark.â
âIâll call her and set up a meeting.â
âThat could be a trap,â he reminds me stubbornly.
âWho says I have to be the one to show up to meet her?â I retort.
He shackles my arm and turns me, pressing me against the round white pillar beside the window, his big body crowding mine. âYou can ânot show upâ from the safe house.â
âYouâre being stubborn, arrogantââ
âAnd remarkably right,â he finishes.
âRemarkably wrong, though you really do have arrogant down to a science.â
âThis isnât a negotiation, Amy.â
âExactly,â I concur. âItâs not.â
The sound of Tellar clearing his throat warns us we are not alone, but neither of us looks at him. We stare at each other, continuing our battle without words, with the same outcome. Total, complete disagreement. Until finally itâs Liam who blinks, his jaw clenching as he softly promises, âWeâll talk when weâre alone,â and pushes off the wall to face Tellar.
Taking that as his cue to speak, Tellar announces, âCoco talked to her ex.â
I step next to Liam, my adrenaline still pumping from our confrontation. âAnd?â
âThe CIA plans to find Meg and put her behind bars, along with anyone else connected to Sheridan, Rollin, or the consortium.â
âWhat about Jared?â Liam asks.
âThatâs where things get interesting,â Tellar comments, sitting on the edge of the couch. âThe minute Coco brought up his name, her ex went cold on her and ended the call.â
âWhat does that mean?â I ask, folding my arms in front of me.
âMy guess,â Liam replies, âis that they have Jared but they donât want us to know.â
âBut Meg told me they have him,â I remind him. âAs if itâs public knowledge.â
âUnless Meg shouldnât know,â Tellar points out.
âTranslation,â Liam says. âThe CIA has a leak.â
âExactly,â Tellar agrees. âIn which case theyâll want her even more, to find out who it is. If we can confirm they have Jared and hand Meg over to them, this is all good news for us. All of our obvious loose ends are tied up.â
Liam settles his hands on his hips under his jacket, shaking his head in frustration. âWe wouldnât be dealing with this if Chad had conferred with us on this plan to âkill himselfâ before he did it. We needed the layers Josh and Dante represent between us and problems before we were thrust back into the spotlight.â
âIsnât that the damn truth,â Tellar says. âWe need to lock Dante down as our man at the party tonight.â
âNo party,â Liam announces. âWe donât have time to facilitate an informal meet-and-greet.
